I overheard Bill Forsythe, being asked by a journalist if he could define choreography. Pausing only a beat, he responded “Choreography is a channel for the desire to dance”. This floored me. Such a wonderful answer, but when I tried I couldn't imagine a composer acknowledging his work being founded on anything so universal as a desire to sing.
